Spiritual Writing: Memoir

Instructor: Wm Anthony Connolly

Class Type: Craft & Workshop

Course Description:

My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers from what seemed like one safe place to another. Like lily pads, round and green, these places summoned and then held me up while I grew...  – Anne Lamott

This eleven-week class is designed as an introduction to spiritual writing – primarily nonfiction prose about personal transformations, and attempts at understanding the divine or life force – leading the student toward the beginnings of their own spiritual memoir (a retelling of a past, personal experience and its significance). Through craft discussions and exercises, the student will investigate how to find their own unique voice; their genre of spiritual writing (from New Age to Inspirational; Buddhist to Christian); and how best to make this highly personal material available to others on their own spiritual journeys. Seven weeks will focus on approaches to spiritual writing, while three weeks will be for students to receive feedback on their work through peer review workshops. The last week will be for reflection and review.
