Voices Only

Lindenwood University’s Voices Only was started in the fall of 2002, and is a unique a cappella ensemble on the college music scene. In the short time since that inception, Voices Only has distinguished itself as one of the premiere vocal groups in the state of Missouri. Within their first year they were selected to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association convention, the most prestigious statewide honor a school group can achieve. They have released their first recording, Debut, and have prepared several selections for a new release, Journeys. Voices Only has toured Germany, Holland, and Sweden with the acclaimed St. Louis barbershop chorus Ambassadors of Harmony, and will be returning to the British Isles in 2008.

The singers that comprise Voices Only share several common traits: supreme musicality, an unparalleled work ethic, the ability to blend into the ensemble without losing the vocal color that makes each of them unique, and—perhaps most important—versatility. They comprise many different majors, and come from all around the world. Voices Only prides itself on a diverse repertoire, and its singers must be adept at performing multiple genres—from Renaissance pieces to contemporary classical works, from lush eight-part jazz arrangements to folk songs to finger-snapping doo-wop tunes.

The singers of Voices Only must also be accomplished actors and improvisers, as each fall they perform in a madrigal dinner that has become a popular holiday event in the St. Louis area.
