Nonprofit Administration (NPA) can lead to a meaningful career of helping others by leading and serving others. Students are educated to be nonprofit leaders and managers through a curriculum of service learning---learning by doing. The Nonprofit Administration Program at Lindenwood University is a hands-out approach to education. Students are actively involved in nonprofit agencies in unique ways. For example:
• Several Nonprofit classes require students to spend time doing, observing and understanding actual community nonprofits by going to the sites of the nonprofit organization.
• The American Humanics Student Association is a student group linked with the NPA program; annually sponsors blood drives for the American Red Cross.
• The Grantwriting classes have raised over $100,000 for nonprofit agencies through actual grants written by students.
• Required Internships actively involve students in a variety of nonprofit organizations providing services from youth to the elderly and for the arts, museums, education, recreation activities and sports.
While involved in the doing, students learn about planning, staffing, budgeting, organizing, implementing, and evaluating all the critical elements to have a successful nonprofit organization.
The NPA undergraduate program has numerous areas of emphasis: Boy Scouts of America Professional Studies, Business, Christian Ministry Studies, Communication, Criminal Justice, Education, Fine Arts, Public Policy, Recreation and Leisure Services Management, Social Services, and YMCA Professional Studies.
NPA undergraduates are also eligible for certification from American Humanics, Inc., a nationally recognized program affiliated with nationally known nonprofit organizations such as United Way of America, Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, the Boys and Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA. Students attend the American Humanics Management Institute, annual retreats, and actively participate in the American Humanics Student Association in addition to coursework to achieve this certification. Nonprofit Administration Graduate Program
The nonprofit sector is a growing sector and it has a continuing need for nonprofit managers. The NPA graduate program identifies and educates students in the ethical and better practices of nonprofit management, leadership and governance. The program orientation is toward those desiring to service their community.
Our students come from varied backgrounds, with and without previous experience in the nonprofit sector. Undergraduates in our BA program may take up to nine semester hours in the graduate program. The faculty provides individualized mentoring and academic advising that allows our students to tailor the program to specific learning goals and objectives while enhancing nonprofit management and leadership competencies.
The 37 hour program is designed to meet the needs of students with smaller sized classes in the evening and possibly reduced tuition for those employed in nonprofit organizations.
