FLS 31300 Advanced Spanish Composition Workshop (3) This composition course is designed to polish the student’s writing skills in Spanish through practical applications of writing, reading, and editing skills.
FLS 31400 Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (3) This course introduces the student the many major linguistic concepts of Spanish linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. The course will also explore the Costa Rican dialects.
FLS 33700 Costa Rica: History and Society of 19th and 20th Centuries (3) This course will provide a survey of the history and society of Costa Rica from the 19th and 20th centuries, with emphasis on politics and environmental and importance of women.
FLS 36000 Literature of Costa Rica (3) This course will examine works of prose, poetry and drama written by important Costa Rican writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will increase their familiarity with the literature of this country while improving their skills in literary analysis.
FLS 36100 Latin American Theater (3) This intensive course will introduce the many concepts of drama analysis through reading and analysis of several major Latin American plays. The student will also study the ways these plays reflect the historical context in which they were written and the concepts of various literary movements.

Supplemental Information: During each Spring Semester, Lindenwood University Foreign Language Department offers an exciting study abroad program in Costa Rica, an enchanting country with a rich, culturally and ethnically diverse population, as well as breathtaking geography and biodiversity. While this 15-week session is required for students majoring in Spanish, it is optional for those completing a minor in the language. Our program in Costa Rica earns students LU credits toward their specific degree requirements while gaining valuable real-life travel, language, and cultural experiences. The coursework is taught by professional Costa Rican Spanish professors and is offered in Spanish only. Students in the program maintain their LU residency and any financial aid eligibility already established. The student experience will be enhanced by home-stays with local families in Costa Rica to get a more complete sense of local daily life.

Course Description: Students may study for 1 or 2 semesters at Ruhr Univeristät in Bochum, Germany. Students may study either German language courses or, depending upon their fluency, courses in a variety of academic disciplines. The typical course load is 12-15 hours and depending on course work at Lindenwood may lead to a contract minor in German Language Studies.
Academic Pre-Requisites: Students should have a minimum of 4 semesters of college German (or permission from the department in the case of high school language study).

Cost & Description: Students pay their regular tuition to Lindenwood. They are then responsible for room & board ($900) while in Germany. Typically students live in student accommodations with shared cooking facilities. A limited meal-plan may be available as well.
Supplemental Information: Germany university terms are roughly 5 months, so students need to plan their coursework carefully to manage the different scheduling.

Course Description: With a base in Florence, the "cradle of the Renaissance," this extended experience introduces students to the history and art of Renaissance Italy through on-site classes and weekly excursions, which can include Rome (Vatican City), Pisa, Bologna, and/or Venice. Students have the option of taking an Art History course (3 credits; GE-CC), a Studio Art course (3 credits; GE- Drawing), or both (up to 6 credits).

Course Name: Special Topics: Theatre in London and Ireland
Number of Credits: 3 Credits
Course Description: This course will explore theatre in London and Ireland to include the current trends in production and a comparison of the UK styles in acting, design, and directing. Students will read, analyze, attend, and critique six to eight theatrical productions of diverse genres. There will be at least two workshops with working professionals in the industry as well as visits to The Theatre Museum in Covent Garden and a backstage tour of the National Theatre. The course will also include a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon where the students will immerse themselves in the world of Shakespeare: his childhood home, his gravesite, the Shakespeare Museum, and a workshop and performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company. The literary portion of the tour includes a Dickensian walking tour while in London (an aspect of particular interest to our students due to our yearly production of A Christmas Carol) and a literary tour in Dublin shaped around the works of Beckett, Wilde, and Joyce. Students will also immerse themselves in the environment by listening to the various dialects of each region, noting the differing sound changes in London and Dublin.

Course Description:This course provides an opportunity for students to learn about the criminal justice system in Spain. It is an excellent cross-cultural opportunity and an exciting case study as the students visit and explore Barcelona and Madrid along with other cities in Spain. One goal of comparative studies is to extend a student’s knowledge of people and cultures beyond his or her own group. After studying and observing differences among countries and their citizens’ perceptions of crime criminal justice, students and scholars have a better understanding of their own society and improved responses to social problems and crime control. A comparative view of criminal justice systems around the world allows us to understand better the dimensions of our own system, and different models for distributing justice and controlling crime and further even to understand the impact that other systems have on the world in more areas than just criminal justice.

Course Description:This course is an opportunity for students to be immersed into Spanish culture and learn first-hand the complex social and economic issues facing this country who are experiencing one of the worst recessions in modern history. Unemployment is above 20% and among people under 30 it is as high as 40% in some parts of the country. During this experience students will examine the political, cultural, and human service structures established since the post Franco-democratic reforms, which continue to shape this country’s future. During this cross-cultural experience, students will visit major cities to witness the immense cultural diversity that resides in this cosmopolitan country. One goal of comparative studies is to extend a student’s knowledge of people and cultures beyond his or her own group. After studying, observing, and contrasting the differences between their country and Spain, students will have a better understanding of their own society and insights into how to improve their country’s response to social and economic problems. A comparative view of human service systems encourages students to understand the dimensions of their own systems to create effective models for promoting social and economic justice.

Course Name: COL 29900 Experiments in Cultural Comparison and Criticism
Number of Credits: 3 Credits
Course Description: This course addresses some of the same cultural criticism debated by the Honors LUL students in the fall of their freshmen year (at a more advanced level), such as cultural trends and attitudes regarding technology, compulsivity, social relations, and the debate over the liberal arts curriculum. U.K. culture and the system of higher education has enough in common with our own for comparison, while significant differences allow for interesting analysis and criticism. On the trip, interviews with professors and students of higher education from each of the three countries will allow students to follow up on the research the prepared prior to the trip. Students will focus on a topic of their choice and write an in-depth research paper comparing American culture U.K. culture (or some subset of either or both). Students would prepare by meeting once a week prior to the England, Ireland and Wales spring break trip to debate extensive readings on the skill of cultural criticism and on relevant aspects of the destination country. Post-trip meetings will consist of mandatory, intensive paper conferences with Dr. Douchant, who will require several drafts.
