Learning Communities

First-Year Learning Communities (FLC) create rich learning environments by emphasizing relationships and community building among students, faculty and staff. FLCs feature small group interaction, common intellectual experiences, co-curricular activities (such as field trips), and mentorship from peers and/or faculty. Students gain greater insight and context for their course material, develop a social network and support, and participate in new experiences that are only available in Lindenwood’s FLCs!

Most FLCs investigate a specific theme or issue with connected course curriculum and experiences, while others focus on specific majors, service-learning opportunities, or a mix of co-curricular encounters.

Lindenwood is offering the following Learning Communities for the Fall 2024 semester.

First-Generation Freshman Learning Community

Please note: only students who attended the LindenFirst First-Generation Summer Experience can register for this Learning Community.

This engaging and exciting First-Year Learning Community will focus on civic engagement and its power to change the world. GEN Z is one of the most socially aware and engaged generation in decades. But they are also one of the most politically disconnected and frustrated. Why won't elected officials listen to their ideas? This learning community helps students understand how governments work and how their generation can use their power to champion the policies that matter to them. Since Presidential elections will take place in Fall 24, there will be a special focus on voting and its relevance to our lives, our choices, and our laws/policies.

Undecided Freshman Learning Community

Students who self-identify as Undecided can choose this FLC.

How do we decide what we want to do with our careers, who we want to be, and how to live our lives? The members of this unique First-Year Learning Community will dive both into the practical answers in their UNIV course, while also exploring these questions more deeply and insightfully and arrive at their own answers in Moral Life.

Honors Freshman Learning Community

Open to first-year students accepted into the Honors Academy. Each student is encouraged to apply for the Honors Academy to be in this community. You can do so by visiting the Honors Academy.

The Honors Learning Community is for students seeking an elevated and inspiring academic experience. Courses in this First-Year Learning Community are designed to overlap and connect in surprising and interesting ways with many “cross-over events” and field trips. Students will engage with others who love to learn while working together towards the distinction of graduating with University Honors.

Business Freshman Learning Community

Open to first-year students majoring in any PCBE major.

The Business Learning Community provides the opportunity for students to further their understanding of and connection to the interdisciplinary world of business and effective global workplace communication. Students will have the ability to learn from guest speakers, connect and collaborate with other students in the major, and get hands-on experience through experiential learning. The courses offered in this learning community fulfill requirements for business majors and may meet University General Education requirements.

Open to first-year students majoring in any STEM major. This important First-Year Learning Community will offer rich opportunities for community building, mentorship and study help in two essential courses for that many STEM majors complete their first year.

This exciting First-Year Learning Community is designed to explore the connections we all share, even if we come from very different cultures and backgrounds. This FLC offers field trips and activities to build community among diverse students, creating spaces for sharing and learning together.
