William Jewell 9, Culver-Stockton 6

William Jewell scored six times in the second inning and never trailed again in a 9-6 victory Culver-Stockton.

 

The Wildcats made things interesting in the ninth for the second straight game, but once again couldn’t pull off the comeback. Down three, Culver-Stockton put the first two runners on in the ninth, but three straight outs ended the game.

 

Jeremy Strack had the big hit in the inning for the Cardinals with a three-run homer. Strack, Jon Ubbenga, Colt Ferguson and Stu Schlemeyer all had two hits. Jon Farris and Nick Steponovich each scored twice, and Steponovich had a home run.

 

Zach Reed got the win in relief, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing just two runs and one hit. Jesse McSpadden pitched the final two innings for the save.

 

Culver-Stockton was led by Chris Rinaudo who had two hits and three RBIs. Jaime Munoz added two hits and two RBIs, and Raul Corrales had two runs.

 

With the loss, Culver-Stockton concludes its season with a 30-16 overall record.

 

Missouri Baptist 19, McKendree 5

Missouri Baptist outslugged McKendree during game five of the NAIA Regional Tournament and eliminated the Bearcats by a 19-5 score.

 

The two teams combined for 35 hits, 17 extra base hits and eight home runs. Most of them came off the Spartans’ bats, including a seven-run sixth inning that broke the game open and featured three homers.

 

Scott Schneider and Joel Johnson each homered twice for Missouri Baptist. Schneider finished with three RBIs and Johnson had four RBIs and three runs. Other top leaders include Price Kendall with four hits and four RBIs, Clint Massey with four hits and three runs, Brandon Patek with three hits, two RBIs and two runs and Scott Talbert with three runs.

 

Aaron Byington earned the win, going seven innings and allowing nine hits and five runs.

 

McKendree was led by Calvin O’Rear who had three hits, including two solo home runs. Brandon Melliere also had three hits, including a three-run homer.

 

The Wildcats conclude their season with a 30-26 record.

 

Lindenwood 7, Avila 1
Behind a near no-hitter by Anthony Clark, the Lindenwood baseball team defeated Avila in the second-round of the NAIA Region V Tournament by a 7-1 score.

 

Clark went 8 2/3 innings before Brad Davidson ended the no-hit bid with a double just inside the left field line. Adam Rodriguez followed that with a single that ended Clark’s shutout. Clark got a popup after that to finish his complete game victory.

 

Clark finished with nine innings pitched, two hits allowed, three walks and six strikeouts. He had six groundouts and six flyouts on the night, and three of his strikeouts came in the final two innings.

 

He received some good defensive help. Chris Getz had four assists, including several deep in the hole at shortstop. Sean Cunningham had four putouts as well in the outfield.

 

Offensively, Lindenwood collected its seven runs on 15 hits. Mike Parson led the way with two bloop singles which drove in three runs during the early innings. He also walked twice and scored two runs. Justin Lamar, A.J. Bancroft and Sean Cunningham all had three hits.

 

Missouri Baptist 15, Lindenwood 1

Missouri Baptist won its 40th game of the season and knocked off the only other undefeated team in the tournament with a 15-1 win over Lindenwood in game seven of regionals.

 

The Lions had the advantage early on, having four hits over the first three innings. They scored just once though and left five runners in those innings. The lone run came on a Matt Pohlman single which scored Mike Parson.

 

Missouri Baptist took control of the game in the middle innings, tying the game in the fourth and taking the lead with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

 

While the offense was clicking for the Spartans, starter Blake Kearney found his grove on the mound, retiring 11 of 13 Lions at one point in the middle innings.

 

Lindenwood’s best chance to get back in the contest came in the seventh when it loaded the bases with two outs. The Spartans’ leftfielder Riley Gavello made a diving catch, saving at least two runs, to end the inning.

 

Missouri Baptist was led by Scott Schneider with three hits, Brandon Patek with four runs and Joel Johnson with three RBIs. Kearney went eight innings, allowing one run and eight hits.

 

The lone player in Lindenwood’s lineup with multi hits was A.J. Bancroft with two.

 

Avila 13, William Jewell 2
Avila scored three times in the first inning which was enough for the team to defeat William Jewell by a 13-2 score in an elimination game late on the second day of action.

 

The first three Eagle batters of the game reached base on two walks and a hit. The big blow in the inning then was a two-run single by Kyle Mowatt.

 

 Rob Carey did the rest from there. He scattered just five hits in the complete game victory and allowed only one earned run.

 

Other offensive leaders for Avila were Brad Davidson, who walked and scored twice, Austin Speer, who had two hits, two runs and a RBI, and Jeff Woods, who had four RBIs, two hits and a run.

 

William Jewell was led by Jon Farris who had two hits and a RBI. Stu Schlemeyer and Jeremy Strack had the team's runs.
