Early mistakes doom Lions in tough home loss to Jewell, 30-21 |

Sixty minutes. That's how long a college football game lasts. Some might seem like much longer, but that's how long the clock ticks - and if you show up to play any less than that, chances are you're going to get beat. In a nutshell, that's what happened to Lindenwood on Saturday night in St. Charles, as visiting William Jewell won the first 15 minutes decisively, then held off a furious LU rally to hold on for a big HAAC road win. After playing so well the previous two weeks in wins over Benedictine and Graceland, the Lions inexplicably reverted to the listless, mistake-prone form of the first two games of the season in the first quarter. A fumble by senior tailback De De Dorsey (brilliant otherwise with 166 yards on 26 carries) on LU's second possession gave the visitors the ball at Lindenwood's 11-yd. line. The Cardinals did what good teams are supposed to do with that kind of field position, scoring on the first play behind a Daniel Forrest pass to tight end Brett Jones. |
Lindenwood seniors George Mumphard (17) and De De Dorsey (1) have a moment after Mumphard's 30-yd. TD catch in the second quarter got the Lions on the board. |
As if that start weren't bad enough, on LU's next possession it took only two plays before field-position disaster struck again. Sophomore QB Brent Hodgkiss set up to pass, only to feel the ball slip from his grasp as he began to throw, with Jewell noseguard Shane Spencer pouncing on the loose ball at the Lindenwood 21-yd. line. This time it took the Cardinals four plays to score, on the first of junior tailback Keith Shankle's three TD's on the night. Just like that, the road underdogs were ahead 14-0, and Mother Momentum was squarely on the sideline away from the press box. "The strange thing is, we had a great week of practice on offense from an execution standpoint, probably the best since we've been here," said Lion head coach Patrick Ross. "Coming off our performance last week, we really expected that offensive unit to be clicking from the start. Turnovers have just killed us in the games we've lost." Things went from bad to worse shortly after that, as LU's next possession ended in a three-and-out in the shadow of their own goal posts. Sophomore Zac Atterberry's punt was returned by Jewell's Ty Hawkins to the LU 31, setting up the visitors with golden field position for the third straight series. It took only four plays for Shankle to pound in again on the first play of the second quarter, and the uphill battle of LU's final 45 minutes was set at 21-0. |

Jewell senior QB Daniel Forrest was a cool customer in the face of LU's defensive pressure on Saturday night, completing 12 of 20 passes with no interceptions.

The rush got to Forrest on this play, as senior Evan Brinker (21) and freshman Gavlin Henderson (63) converge for a sack. |
From that point on, the Lions looked much like the team that routed league-leading Graceland the previous week on the road. Hodgkiss threw the first of his three TD passes on the night to senior George Mumphard on the Lions' next drive, with the East St. Louis native making a spectacular grab on a 30-yard score. On the night, the Lions would outgain Jewell by 226-117 on the ground, and register 18 first downs - numbers which would usually account for a win. The most sacred statistic in football, though, other than the score, is turnover margin. The 2005 Lions (currently at -9 for the year) are the poster child for how important that number is during the course of a season. The Cardinals answered Mumphard's score with a 28-yd. field goal by freshman Stephen Bader later in the second period, but were unable to hold off Lindenwood on the Lions' final drive of the first half. That penetration ended in a leaping, 33-yard TD reception by junior Steven Kennedy with less than a minute remaining before intermission. That left it 24-14 at halftime, and the Lions were more than halfway up that long hill. "We came into the locker room at halftime and felt like we were back on track," said Ross. "We made a couple of adjustments to the front they were showing us on defense, and Dorsey was able to get some nice runs in the second half." The Lions got on the board again midway through the third quarter, with a daring bit of play-calling by Ross and the offensive staff. Facing a 4th-and-two at the Jewell 8-yd. line, Ross passed on the field goal attempt - and the play-action pass that was called, and executed to perfection, resulted in Kennedy's second TD grab of the night, making it 24-21. |

Sophomore QB Brent Hodgkiss watches the final seconds tick away from the Lindenwood bench. The 6'2, 197-lb. native of Irving, Tex., threw three TD passes on the night, covering eight, 30 and 33 yards |
Jewell's next possession resulted in a three-and-out, and the Lions took over again, driving deep into Cardinal territory early in the final period. With a first down at the Jewell 30, a slashing run by Dorsey moved it to the 12 ... only to be called back on what could be most delicately described as a very questionable blocking below the waist call. "No official ever cost anyone a game by himself. We did that ourselves by playing so poorly and turning it over in the first quarter," said Ross. "Still, that was a huge play in the game because we had all the momentum, a first down at the 12-yard line, and all of a sudden, we're back at the 45 with a first-and-25. You'd like to see the players decide things, but we can't use that as an excuse - the back judge didn't turn the ball over for us." That pivotal possession ended with an Atterberry punt out of the end zone, and Jewell used the break in momentum to mount a game-clinching, 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Shankle's third TD with only 2:51 remaining in the game. "We just have to show the same kind of heart we did after the first two games of the season, when the bandwagon emptied and we had to pull together," said Ross. "As balanced as this conference is this season, it's likely that the champion is going to have two losses, so we're not buried yet. Evangel isn't going to feel sorry for us, that's for sure, so we better be ready to play next week." The Lions travel to Springfield next weekend for a 1:30 kickoff against the Crusaders on Saturday. |
