Unbeaten, 9th-ranked Lions travel to Kentucky for big one
Lindenwood vs. Georgetown
Sept. 29, 2007 - 1:30
Georgetown, KY

The preliminaries are over now.

Lindenwood University head football coach Patrick Ross has seen his team jump out to an outstanding start to the 2007 season - the Lions are 4-0, ranked 9th in the nation, and are averaging 47.9 points per game. Included in that total are four big Heart of America Athletic Conference wins, putting LU alone atop the Heart standings going into October. Enviable position, indeed.

"We're smart enough to know that the hardest part of our schedule is ahead of us," said Ross, in his fourth season at the Lindenwood helm. "Starting with this Saturday."

Saturday, the Lions will face, perhaps, the program's most important game since the national playoff loss to Hastings, (Neb.) in 2004 - a road matchup with perennial NAIA powerhouse Georgetown College, in a game that will be of importance not only regionally, but nationally. Not only do the Lions have to travel to the Tigers' home turf in Kentucky, but they'll be facing a Bill Cronin-coached team in a highly unusual position ... backed into a corner with two losses already, where another would basically begin the countdown to 2008.

"I don't guess there have been many points where they've been in a position like this, early in the season, since Coach Cronin has been there," said Ross. "They can score with anyone in the country, and our offense is playing with a tremendous amount of confidence, as well. It should be a fun game to watch."

One of the many intriguing matchups on display Saturday in Georgetown, Ken., will be the one between Lindenwood junior QB Ben Kisner (right) and Georgetown senior All-American corner Clay Hamblen (left).

That Lindenwood offense, under new offensive coordinator Shawn Jackson, has been all but unstoppable so far in 2007, racking up yardage and points at a dizzying pace in all four games. Junior quarterback Ben Kisner has been the ringleader, completing 71% of his passes so far, good for 1,065 yards and seven TD's. The Lion offensive line and tailbacks have also gotten in on the fun - the three-headed tailback firm of Abdullah, Murrell and Durant has combined to average 178 yards on 27 carries per game ... with 10 TD's ... while averaging 6.4 yards per carry.

Senior Dominic Peterson is the leading receiver with 21 catches for 237 yards and three scores, topping a list of eleven different Lions who have caught passes already this season.

"We had an idea in the spring that we could be good on offense," said Ross. "But what has put us over the top is the addition of some really good young players at receiver who have made us a deep unit out there. That has been a factor in every game."

Freshmen wideouts Mike Bunton, Ricky McDermott and Nick Melillo (a product of Louisville Trinity HS, who is going back to the old neighborhood this weekend) have given the LU receiver corps a big boost, along with the standout play of former fullback Austin Bortle and former quarterback Brent Hodgkiss.

"It's an interesting group of guys at the wide receiver position, because most of them started out at some other position," said Ross. "Our coaches have done a good job of getting them ready, and they have stepped up and embraced the competition at the position."

Junior wide receiver Brent Hodgkiss (12) has been very good for the Lions in 2007, catching 13 passes for 148 yards - after starting at QB for LU in 2005

As enjoyable as a spectator game as it figures to be, it could be something less than that for lovers of defense. Georgetown did no imitations of the 1985 Chicago Bears last week in a 63-56 road loss to Virginia-Wise, and the Lions have struggled on defense at times in 2007.

Both teams, however, will put outstanding defensive athletes on the field, and with some pride having been stung in recent weeks in both defensive huddles, it might not be a great Saturday to be roaming around with the ball in your hand.

"I think both defensive units will come out on Saturday and rise to the challenge," said Ross. "I know Coach Cronin will have some things corrected that hurt them last week, and I know our coaches and players are looking forward to the challenge of stopping their offense."

Junior linebacker Jamil Abdullah is coming off the biggest game of his career for the Lions, earning HAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for a 19-tackle outburst in a 39-15 road win over Culver-Stockton last weekend. The native of Indianapolis also picked up three tackles for loss and was credited with 1.5 QB sacks in the game.

"Jamil is playing very well, and I look for him to get better and better as the season goes along," said Ross. "He's like a lot of our guys on defense - very capable of making a big play to turn a game. We've given up some yards, but we've also put up 20 takeaways in four games. You don't become No. 2 in the nation in turnover margin by being poor on defense."

Either way it goes, whether the defenses rule the day or the offenses empty the guns on each other, it should be fun to see. The Lions will have six tough Heart games remaining, regardless of the outcome ... and Georgetown will still have plenty to play for, provided they can pull off the home win. It should be a playoff atmosphere, with two of the best NAIA teams in the country on display, one looking to step into the upper echelon, and one looking to stay there. Kickoff is set for 1:30 in Georgetown.
