Lions travel to William Jewell for huge HAAC road battle
Lindenwood vs. William Jewell
Sept. 30, 2006 - Greene Stadium
Liberty, MO

A very important Heart of America Athletic Conference match up is on tap for Saturday afternoon at William Jewell College, where the Lions will put their 2-1 HAAC record on the line against the Cardinals. Jewell stands at 2-2 in league play, so head coach Fran Schwenk's team will be fighting to keep its' head above water in the Heart title race. Lindenwood can take a huge momentum step toward the second half of its' season with a road win, so plenty of intensity can be expected for the 1:00 kickoff.

"We've done some nice things this season, especially when you consider how young we are," said Lion head coach Patrick Ross, whose team has posted a record of 19-4 in Heart play since his staff came to LU in 2004. "But playing tough against good teams isn't good enough for our program - we need to come out every week and play like we did last Saturday against Graceland."

Ross refers to last week's dismantling of 8th-ranked Graceland, a game in which the Lions landed a series of knockout blows in a 28-3 first half, racking up 312 yards in two quarters. If you're a Lion fan, the warm fuzzy was made even better by the fact that many of those landing the blows were freshmen and sophomores ... names like Kisner, Uren, Hombs, Symons, Harris, Farrell, etc., are already making waves in the Heart, and they'll be around for a while.

"For a guy like Trevan Hombs (freshman wideout from Blue Springs) to come into that kind of game and contribute two big play touchdowns in that first half is exciting for everyone, especially him," said Ross. "You'd like to think you're recruiting guys who can make plays, but it's nice to see it so early in a guy's career."

The Cardinals have been an enigma early in the season, dropping perennial HAAC power MidAmerica Nazarene to open the season, but losing in overtime the last two weeks to Baker and a lightly-regarded Culver-Stockton team. The Cardinals have one of the top tailbacks in the league in junior Leon Wiggins, and a physical defense led by senior Anthony Simone, so they can be a tough match up for anyone on a given day. That was true of last year's meeting in St. Charles, when Jewell took advantage of three early turnovers by LU to score three short-field TD's en route to a 21-0 lead.

The Lions battled back in that game, nearly taking a lead late in the game, before eventually falling after a late Jewell drive put the game away, 30-21. You can bet your last dollar that no one in the Lion camp has forgotten that game.

"We felt like that was the game last year where we let our season slip away," said Ross. "We turned it over and they took advantage, then we couldn't get them off the field the last time they had the ball. We all remember how bad we felt after that game, though."

Sophomore QB Ben Kisner enjoyed his best outing of the season aganist Graceland last weekend, passing for 184 yards and a pair of TD's in the 38-21 win.

The Lions will have to do things well to win on the road against a team which is surely battling the frustration of two straight OT losses. Taking care of the football is first on the list - when LU takes it away more than they turn it over, good things usually happen in the win column.

The Heart championship race is just getting under way, and both Jewell and the Lions can stake a claim to being in the front of the pack this weekend. The alternative - dropping back and taking a spectator's view of the fun at the top - is about as appealing as a cozy, candlelight dinner with Roseanne Barr.

Game time is set for 1:00 pm in Liberty, MO.

The LU defense, anchored by senior noseguard David Gladney (70), has received outstanding play in 2006 from sophomores Billy Ray Uren (99) and Eric Heyde (6), along with junior Jared Shoemaker (27).
