“Harvey” is a 1944 play by American playwright Mary Chase about an affable man named Elwood P. Dowd and his invisible friend Harvey, a 6 1/2 foot tall rabbit. When Elwood starts to introduce Harvey to guests at a society party, his society-obsessed sister, Veta, has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter Myrtle Mae and their family from future embarrassment.
When they arrive at the sanitarium, due to a comedy of errors, the doctors commit Veta instead of Elwood, but when the truth comes out, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion.
But when Elwood arrives back at the Sanitarium, the question arises…. Is Harvey just a product of Elwood’s imagination or does he really exist?
The show was staged on Broadway from 1944-1949, winning a Pulitzer Prize.
