The Interactive Media & Web Design (IMWD) degree at Lindenwood University provides creative and aspiring minds with the skills needed to mix visual elements to effectively communicate a message to an analyzed target audience. Whether it be the marriage of video to a web interface, or the synchronization of audio to an animation, multimedia skills are in high demand; and graduates are capable of finding a fit in a variety of employment opportunities. For the student who enjoys any combination of web design, animation, video, audio, interface design, and/or computer graphics, this degree offers the skills necessary to turn an eclectic interest into a rewarding career.
Interactive Media & Web Design majors and minors gain hands-on experience with current industry leading software applications, but the learning transcends that of mere technological skills. Emphasis throughout the curriculum is on the transferrable skills necessary to make aesthetically pleasing and intuitive designs regardless of the application being used. A clear understanding of the target audience and how to best communicate an intended message is necessary; a design must not merely “look good”, it must engage and communicate.
To ensure that IMWD students are able to succeed in this demanding field, a 57 hour degree program that spans a variety of topics while still focusing on a unified purpose of effectively communicating a message has been established. Students begin the program taking courses that will help to establish a solid foundation in graphics, programming logic, video production and web design. During their second year of studies each of these foundations is further enhanced and the student’s sophomore year concludes with a focus on establishing a strong resume, digital portfolio, and plan for future employment. The third and fourth year of the program moves the student from mere knowledge of techniques to application. Students are challenged with real-world projects that result in the formation of deliverables for a variety of mediums. At culmination of the program students are required to further apply their education in the form of an internship or on-campus applied course. Through the internship opportunity, many of our majors formulate relationships that render them a job upon graduation. In addition to the internship a final IMWD Capstone course requires collaborative use of the skills that a student has attained during the program in a practicum format. Students not only finish the capstone course with a substantial project, but also a polished resume and impressive digital portfolio. During this four year journey students take courses that focus on graphic design, digital imaging, illustration, desktop publishing, 3D graphics, mobile application development, audio editing, video editing, interactive authoring, ethics, law, programming logic, web design, and more.
If an engaging and purposeful career that embraces both technology while encouraging creativity appeals to you, then Lindenwood University’s Interactive Media & Web Design program has an open seat.
