About Mass Communications

At the heart of Lindenwood Mass Communications education is hands-on experience. When classroom instruction is augmented by application in the field or studio, learning in meaningful. The connection between theory and practical purpose leads to greater understanding. Students are engaged, and not only is their academic growth improved, their skill set enhancement makes them very successful in competitive communications careers.

The Lindenwood Communications faculty are people who have considerable experience in the fields in which they teach. These are professionals who have spent decades in advertising, broadcasting, sports, public relations and a variety of related industries. They know what they are talking about. They are teaching what they lived.

There are basic skills that all communication professionals must learn. People looking for communications jobs will be expected to shoot, edit, and upload video. They will need to know how to create and maintain basic web pages. Understanding audiences and how to motivate them is key in being successful. These, and other fundamental proficiencies, are at the core of the LU Communications curriculum. Once these are mastered, students choose specific areas of emphasis.

Broadcast Emphasis

One of the most popular programs on the Lindenwood campus. These students are having fun preparing themselves for lucrative, fulfilling careers. Many well-known broadcasters learned their craft as a Lindenwood student. Using KCLC and LUTV (see “Facilities”), the faculty challenges participants to perfect their abilities in radio, television, audio and video.

Media Management and Sales

Well-educated and driven professionals who generate revenue by demonstrating to clients the value of investing in advertising will never be out of work. Creative and vision-driven management is vital in keeping communications companies relevant and profitable. Lindenwood students in this emphasis will soon be responsible for the media the public will be “consuming.”

Sports Information

Every successful sports organization depends on people who know how to gather, package, and distribute information. Lindenwood University teaches people to understand what fans are looking for when researching their favorite teams. This can include statistics, player information, game write-ups, media packages, interesting stories – almost an unlimited variety of productions. Students are also trained to attractively present this data in compelling print media, Internet sites, and audio and video media. People who enjoy sports and have communications talents will find this emphasis a rewarding program to pursue.
