Frequently Asked Questions

Do guests need tickets?
Commencement guests will not need tickets for the 2015 ceremonies. Guest seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. On Friday, the guest gate will open at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the guest gate will open at 8:30 a.m.

What time do candidates need to be there?
Master’s and Doctoral Degree Commencement (EdD, EdS, MA, MBA, MFA, MPA, and MS): 7 p.m., Friday, May 15, at the St. Charles Family Arena. All graduating students choosing to participate in the ceremony are required to check in for the ceremony at the Gate 4 entrance by 6 p.m. Assembly for the service will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Gate 4.

Undergraduate Commencement (BA, BFA, BS, BSN, and BSW): 10 a.m., Saturday, May 16, at the St. Charles Family Arena. All students choosing to participate in the ceremony are required to check in for the ceremony at the Gate 4 entrance by 9 a.m. Assembly for the service will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Gate 4.

What happens at the check-in table?
All graduating students will receive a card with a lineup row and number. The card will also list a seating row and number. Students should proceed to lineup prior to Commencement at the lineup row and number noted on the card.

What time should guests arrive?
The St. Charles Family Arena will open to the public as follows: on Friday, the guest gate will open at 5:30 p.m.; on Saturday, the guest gate will open at 8:30 a.m.

How long does the ceremony usually last?
The ceremony will be approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in length.

Will my name be read?
Yes. All graduating students cross the stage – graduating student names are read from the card they receive at check-in. Prior to crossing the stage participants hand the card to the reader, the reader announces the name, the participant is congratulated by the President, and he/she receives a diploma cover from the President.

Do I have to wear a cap and gown to the commencement ceremony?
Yes, all Faculty and participating students taking part in the graduation ceremony are required to wear traditional academic attire.

Do I qualify for general honors and how do I get my honors cords?
The Lindenwood faculty awards general honors to those undergraduate students who have completed all degree requirements with academic distinction. To be eligible for general honors, a student must have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours in residence at Lindenwood University. Students whose Lindenwood cumulative grade point averages fall within the following ranges are eligible: Cum Laude (3.70 to 3.85), Magna Cum Laude (3.86 to 3.93), Summa Cum Laude (3.94 to 4.00). Students must have achieved the minimum cumulative GPA by the end of the academic quarter, semester, or J-Term preceding the May Commencement. General honors cannot be based on the estimated outcome of terms in progress at the time of the May Commencement. Please note: General honors are not awarded to graduate, specialist, or doctoral students.

When and where do I pick up my honors cords?
Honors cords will be distributed to eligible undergraduate students at graduation check-in on the day of the ceremony. Undergraduate students will be issued the appropriate honors cord at the check-in table.

Do Graduate students receive general honors?
No. General honors cords are not awarded to graduate, specialist, or doctoral students.

Do I have to wear my hood during the ceremony if I am a graduate student?
Graduate students will receive caps, gowns, tassels, and hoods in the mail or in person on the designated day on campus pick-up days for students who choose not to order online. Graduate student should wear all items, including the hood, when they arrive for check-in at Commencement.

How do I order my cap and gown for the ceremony?

  • Online orders must be placed by April 20, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. at
  • If students choose not to order online, they may use our regalia pick-up option. Height and weight will be taken from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 10, in the Lindenwood Spirit and Supplies Shoppe on the St. Charles campus.

Can I participate if I already have a cap and gown from somewhere else or from a previous ceremony?
No. Graduating students must order a cap and gown from Herff Jones even if they previously ordered regalia for a prior ceremony. Herff Jones provides Lindenwood with a list of students who have placed orders online or in person for the 2015 ceremonies, and this list is used to generate the lineup and seating for the ceremony. If you have not ordered from Herff Jones or you have ordered regalia for a prior ceremony and you do not order regalia for the 2015 ceremonies, you will not have a place in the lineup or a place in the graduating student seating area.

Do I have a graduation fee and what does it include?
Undergraduate students pay a graduation fee of $100 that covers the entire cost of graduation processing and commencement, including diplomas, caps, and gowns. The $125 fee for graduate students and $200 fee for doctoral students includes diplomas, caps, gowns, hoods, and other applicable fees. All outstanding Lindenwood charges must be paid before diplomas are released. All graduating students must pay the graduation fee regardless of whether the students choose to participate in the ceremony.

Is there a graduation rehearsal I need to attend?
No, there is no rehearsal.

When do I get my diploma?
Diplomas are held in the Business Office for pick-up. You may submit a request to have your diploma mailed via your student portal.  Scroll down the left side of the screen to “Request your Diploma”, under the Student Services heading. Students may request in writing that their diplomas be mailed. You may print a Request for Diploma to be mailed from the LU graduation home page. All graduating students will receive one (1) copy of their transcripts at no charge. The transcript will be included with the mailed diploma. March diplomas will be available on May 4, 2015. May diplomas will be available on July 6, 2015. June diplomas will be available on August 3, 2015. August diplomas will be available on September 28, 2015.

Will professional photos be taken?
Lindenwood University contracts with GradImages® to photograph each graduate at Baccalaureate and Commencement. Photos are taken of graduates receiving their diploma, standing in front of a Lindenwood banner, and as a close up. Graduates can pre-register their e-mail, and GradImages will contact them when their photos are available for online viewing and ordering. While there is no obligation to make a purchase, proofs will be emailed and mailed to each student’s address. Up to 6 (six) family members’ contact information may be added to help share the good news and the photos by going to the GradImages site at
