Work to make a difference

Human Services Faculty

The School of Human Services hosts programs that prepare graduates for jobs in the helping professions—work that makes a difference. Our career-oriented fields focus on making our world a safer and healthier place to live and thrive. Helping comes in many forms—protecting, solving problems, spiritual development, volunteering, and ensuring safety and security. Our professors are from their given field—they have been law enforcement officers, social workers, ministers, fundraisers, firefighters, and military officers. Our faculty include those who have counseled abused and neglected children, been undercover drug agents, defended our country in war, run blood drives, served as youth pastors, and risked their lives fighting fires. Their research interests include the elderly, racial profiling, gifted children, crime on college campuses, and child abuse. They are dedicated to sharing their experience and expertise with you in interactive courses that intertwine theory with practice. Their office doors are open to you.

Human Services is strongly connected to the community. We offer practicums and internships that offer our students real world experience while still in college. Our students participate in ride-alongs with the police, preaching on Sundays, working with victims of domestic violence, and raising much-needed funds for nonprofit agencies. Field trips to prisons, the state capital for Advocacy Day, homeless shelters, and trips to Europe to learn cross-cultural approaches to law enforcement or social services are ways we enhance the education of our students.

Our graduates are working to make a difference. Among them: Kelly is a police officer, Renee is a social worker in a nursing home, Scott is a probation and parole officer, Cleotha works with at-risk teens, Kerry is a university activities director, Kim runs an animal shelter, and Bjorn expects to be an Army chaplain. They are getting paid to fulfill their passion. They have changed their commitment to a cause into a full-time career.

Do you want to make our world a better place?

Do you want to work to make a difference?
