CIGS - Admissions Requirements

Preference in admission will be given to students who (1) have a strong academic background, (2) demonstrate a strong command of oral and written communication, and (3) show a genuine desire to engage in post-secondary research. A minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA (or non-U.S. equivalent) is required for graduate admissions. There is a formal language requirement for admission although students without the required language background may enroll in supplemental language courses to obtain proficiency.

Required documents for admission:
  • Completed online graduate application
  • $30.00 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Personal Statement indicating why the applicant wishes to pursue graduate studies in the field of International & Global Studies
  • Two Letters of Recommendation
  • TOEFL Score (if applicable): 550 (paper-based total)/213 (computer-based total)
  • Writing sample from either undergraduate or other graduate studies, the purpose of which is to determine the student’s level of academic ability and research prowess
+1 If an international student is proficient in his or her home language and English, this would satisfy the language requirement.

+2 If a student has enrolled in six credits of undergraduate foreign language, the student will have fulfilled the foreign language requirement.

+3 If a student has no foreign language experience, the student will need to enroll in six credits of an undergraduate foreign language or study a language independently and be assessed in order to determine if they have equivalent knowledge.
