English - Course Offerings

Course Offerings
The English department offers a wide range of courses in several areas of study: literature, creative writing, English Language, technical writing, and criticism. Gaining a broad knowledge of English and the English language is an important skill in a large number of fields, in such areas as teaching, editing, business, public relations, and creative writing. All faculty members teaching these courses are professional, well-trained scholars. Upper-level class sizes average between 15 and 25 students, and all students receive individual help and attention. Courses are designed for student success on the state required PRAXIS exam for teachers.

Literature courses
Unlike many schools, Lindenwood University's English Program takes a traditional approach. We believe students should be familiar with the classical and modern canon, as well as with traditional literary periods. In keeping with this belief, we offer courses in the following periods:

Ancient
Renaissance
Romantic
Modern
Medieval
Restoration
Victorian
Contemporary

Creative Writing courses
The English program's creative writing courses feature a variety of genres, including fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction and writing for performance. Course offerings range from workshops designed to introduce students to contemporary authors and techniques used within the various genres to a capstone course of the creative writing program which incorporates all the skills and knowledge learned in the program to produce a finished and polished piece of fiction in one of the genres offered through the creative writing program.

English Language and Criticism courses
Developing an understanding of the mechanics of the English language allows students to develop a more fluid and mature style of writing, while a grasp of the critical theories and research methods of the scholar and critic provide students the skills necessary in the job market outside the classroom. As such, the English program offers a variety of courses in this area of study.
