English - Degrees

Major Emphases
In the English program, we offer two tracks of study: Literature and Creative Writing. Both tracks seek to develop a deeper understanding of the English language, and to prepare students to meet the challenges they will face outside the classroom.

English Major with emphasis in Literature
A major in English with an emphasis in Literature requires a minimum of 42 credit hours of coursework taken through the English program. These courses consist of core literature courses and six hours of English electives. In addition, majors must complete the general education requirements for the bachelor of arts and bachelor of fine arts degrees required of all undergraduate students at Lindenwood University, as well as thirty seven hours of electives. As an English major, students are required to achieve proficiency in at least one foreign language to Intermediate II level.

English Major with emphasis in Creative Writing
A major in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing requires a minimum of 37 credit hours taken through the English program. These courses consist of workshops, literature courses, English language and criticism courses, and a creative thesis course. In addition, majors must complete the general education requirements for the bachelor of arts and bachelor of fine arts degrees required of all undergraduate students at Lindenwood University, as well as forty two hours of electives. As an English major, students are required to achieve proficiency in at least one foreign language to Intermediate II level.

English Minors
Minors are offered in Creative Writing and English Literature. Each minor requires 21 hours of coursework, including elective courses chosen in consultation with the director of the program.

The Writing Certificate Program
The ability to write well is regarded as an indication not just of good communication skills but of critical thinking and organizational skills as well. For these reasons, employers in a variety of areas rate effective writing high on the list of qualifications for potential employees. Thus, certification of writing skills on their transcripts serves to give Lindenwood graduates a competitive edge in the job market.

The English department, in conjunction with the Communications Division, offers a Certificate of Writing, to be noted on students' transcripts after completion of 12 hours of upper level writing courses beyond ENG 150 and ENG 170. For more information, contact Dr. John Bell or Dr. Jann Weitzel.
