School of Humanities - History and Geography

Program Description:
The Lindenwood University history curriculum focuses on the United States and Europe while emphasizing an understanding of world history as a whole. It is geared to challenge students intellectually. It demands that they sharpen their analytical powers and their ability to read critically and write effectively.

The process is a challenge that can become a great passion and may even be described in simpler terms as fun. Upon graduation, the skills gained and intellectual growth achieved will be a solid preparation for a great range of jobs from journalism and jurisprudence to management and marketing.
Requirement for Major in History:
The requirements for a major in history consist of 41 hours of departmental coursework, including classes in the following areas:
. 12 hours of World History
. 15 hours of United States History
. 12 hours of European History
. 3 hours of US Government
. 3 hours of economics
As sophomores, students take “Historical Methods,” which introduces them to the study of history. As seniors, students will take the "Comprehensive Examination," the 2 credit-hour capstone course in the history program.
Requirements for Minor in History:
A minor in history requires a minimum of 18 hours of coursework, including HIS100, HIS200, at least 6 hours in American history and at least 6 hours in European and/or Asian or Latin American history.
Requirements for Minor in Social Studies:
A minor in social studies requires a minimum of 18 hours of coursework, including ANT112, GEO201, PS 156, PSY100, SOC102, and one course from the following: ANT210, ANT300, ANT317, ANT334, BA 315, BA 415, SOC318, or SOC320. This minor is recommended for students who are seeking to be certified to teach social studies at the secondary level.
Benefits of Studying at Lindenwood University:
Lindenwood history graduates work in many fields. To be sure, most of our majors gain great satisfaction teaching history or social studies in public and private schools. Many have found employment in the St. Charles/St. Louis region, and others have earned positions in other parts of the country.

Several history majors have gone on to pursue graduate studies at the masters and doctoral levels. Other students have pursued careers in law, government, and business. Those who write us or return to visit often report that the training they received as history majors at Lindenwood University proved critical to their success and often gave them an edge over other college graduates prepared less thoroughly.
Why Study History?
Nearly everyone finds something intriguing about the past, and Lindenwood University is unquestionably located in a place of great historic importance. When the school was founded by George and Mary Sibley in 1827, the St. Charles County region was part of the early American frontier, a place settled by migrants from the eastern United States searching for new lands and new opportunities. But if you are like most people, you may doubt that an interest in history matters much in choosing a major or in leading to a good job. Of course, you might become a teacher, but history majors are also prepared for many other opportunities and careers. Why, then, consider history as your undergraduate major?

Let's look for a moment at what majoring in history is like and at what Lindenwood history majors do after graduation. Studying history will open to you amazing eras of human struggle, achievement, and failure. In all ages, men and women have, to varying degrees, been driven by power, money, bitterness, as well as noble ideals and high hopes for the future. Studying history in college not only provides new ways of analyzing these aspects of human experience but will also enable you to investigate their sources and create your own accounts of what likely happened.
