Professor Ray Scupin honored

December 14, 1999

Dr. Raymond Scupin, professor of anthropology and international studies, has been named a recipient of the 1999 Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Professor Scupin was honored with other recipients of the award by Governor Mel Carnahan and the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education on December 9.

A member of the Lindenwood faculty for 19 years, Professor Scupin is chair of the General Education Committee and the International Programs Task Force at LU. Additionally, he has conducted extensive anthropological research on Native American communities in California and several countries in Asia.

He has published works based on his anthropological work, as well as two well-known textbooks: "Cultural Anthropology: A Global Perspective," and "Anthropology: A Global Perspective," both of which are in their fourth edition. Most recently, Professor Scupin published a textbook titled "Religion and Culture: An Anthropological Focus," which surveys all the various religious traditions that anthropologists have studied.

Professor Scupin has been elected as a fellow into the American Anthropological Association and is active in many professional organizations in his field. His research is integrated into his everyday teaching to make the state-of-the-art knowledge within anthropology accessible to the undergraduate student.

Professor Scupin received a bachelor's degree in history and Asian studies from the University of California-Los Angeles. He completed a master's degree and doctorate in anthropology at the University of California-Santa Barbara.
