MIAMI--Inge Heiremans scored the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute as top-seeded Lindenwood defeated ninth-seeded College of St. Mary (NE) 3-1 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 17th NAIA Women's Soccer National Championships at St. Thomas University.
Lindenwood, now 22-0, added an insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining as Becky Brown took the ball from a defender and scored an unassisted goal.
Heiremans, who now has two goals and four assists in the national tournament, helped stake the Lady Lions to a 1-0 lead when she assisted Bea Mettler's goal just 4:25 into the game.
But St. Mary, 21-4, battled back a few minutes later to even the score. The two squads played a defensive struggle for most of the second half until Heiremans controlled Mettler's deflected shot and fired a 17-yard blast into the back of the net at 75:07, giving Lindenwood the lead.
The loss eliminated St. Mary's from tournament competition, while the Lady Lions advance to Monday's semifinal match with the winner of Azusa-Pacific University (CA) and Palm Beach Atlantic (FL).
