Grammy winner Brecker to perform on campus

February 7, 2000

St. Charles County's premiere jazz event of 2000 will be at Lindenwood University when Grammy Award-winner Randy Brecker performs with the Lindenwood Jazz Band and Combo in a special concert at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the Hyland Performance Arena.

Tickets for the concert cost $10 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens. Special VIP tickets, which include a reception that evening, are available for $25. In addition to Brecker and the Lindenwood band, the evening will include performances by two of the area's best high school jazz bands: Principia High School and Parkway South High School.

Brecker, a trumpet player, is renowned as a jazz educator and is regarded as one of the finest jazz trumpet players among today's performers. Brecker has eight solo albums to his credit, dating back to his debut "Score" in 1969. His latest, "Into the Sun," was released in 1995. Additionally, he has appeared as a studio player on dozens of other records.

Brecker has three Grammy Awards to his credit, two in 1994 and one in 1998. He is also respected for his versatility, having performed with the likes of David Sanborn; Blood, Sweat and Tears; James Taylor; Frank Zappa, and the legendary Clark Terry, who performed with the Lindenwood Jazz Band in last year's concert.

Along with the concert, Brecker's visit includes a rare opportunity for high school musicians. For an additional fee, students who have bought tickets for the concert can take part in a 3 p.m. clinic with Brecker at Lindenwood. As much as he is known for his playing, he is also highly regarded as an innovative jazz educator.

For additional information about the concert or the clinic, call Bob Carter, Lindenwood's director of bands, at (636) 916-1912 or Marsha Parker, dean of fine and performing arts, at (636) 949-4906.
