March 3, 2000
Riding high on the performance of 125-pound freshman Brant Bruner, the Lindenwood Lions finished 8th in the nation Saturday at the NAIA Wrestling National Championships at LU's own Hyland Performance Arena in St. Charles.
Bruner, from Claremore, OK, defeated Andrew Medders from Cumberland College by decision, 14-5.
To make it to the spotlight match at 125 pounds, Bruner defeated Charles Gonzalez of Missouri Valley College in the semifinals by decision, 3-2.
Bruner jumped in the arms of his coach, Joe Parisi after the championship match.
"I'm pretty excited," said Bruner, whose parents attended the match. "I didn't think I'd get this far. This is great."
Lindenwood's other star performers included St. Charles native Tim Michel, who finished 4th at 141 pounds; John Venne, who was 4th at 174 pounds; Nathan James, who was 7th at 184 pounds; and senior Chris Smith, who finished 5th in the HWT division.
Montana-State Northern won the team title, finishing just ahead of Lindenwood's Heart of America Conference rival, Missouri Valley.
