First Boone Home "Paint Out" to be held July 8

The first Boone Home Paint Out, jointly sponsored by Lindenwood University and the St. Peters Cultural Arts Center, will be held on the grounds of the Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, July 8, with an awards presentation at 4:30 p.m.

This special day-long event will allow artists working in painting, drawing, watercolor and pen and ink to capture the images and spirit of this exceptional property and to display and sell completed works from their portfolios. A Best of Show Purchase Prize of $200 will be awarded, as well as $40 "Best of Media" prizes in the other categories. The piece awarded the "Best of Show Purchase Prize" will be added to the Boone Home Permanent Collection.

The opportunities for interesting and challenging images at the Boone Home are almost endless. In addition to the historic 1803 home where Daniel spent his final years and died in 1820, the property offers a one-room school house, the Sappington-Dressel House, a beautiful 1860s chapel, a woodwright's shop, a springhouse, a carriage house and barn, as well as the sweeping vistas of the Femme Osage Valley. Costumed interpreters, craftsmen and performers will be on the grounds to add more period flavor to the event, as well as many visitors from the general public. Both interior and exterior settings will be available to the working artists.

For the competition, artists will arrive in the morning and complete works in the four media areas during the day; judging will be held at 4 p.m. Keiko Ishida, visual arts program secialist from the Missouri Arts Council, will judge the competition. In addition, artists may bring portfolios of completed work for sale to the public; each artist is responsible for attending and selling his or her own work.

Advanced registration fees for participants are $15 for working artists and $10 for students. All artists registering the day of the event will be charged $20. Artists wishing to sell work to the public during the event will pay an additional $10 fee.

The Historic Daniel Boone Home, a part of the Lindenwood University system, is located on Highway F, five miles west of Highway 94 in St. Charles County. It is open to the public for guided tours only from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. To register for the event, contact the St. Peters Cultural Arts Center at (636) 928-3338.
