Annual Pioneer Days celebration Sept. 27-28

September 1, 2003

The Daniel Boone Home and Lindenwood University will host their annual Pioneer Days’ encampment and folklife festival, Sept. 27-28, on the Boone Home grounds in Defiance.

“We hold the festival so people can see all different aspects of what it was like for the Boone family living on the frontier,” Greta Maxheimer, Curator for the Boone Home, said.

Tourists will get a firsthand look at life in the 1840s, and will even get to meet George Washington, Simon Kenton, Merriwether Lewis, William Clark and Daniel Boone. Live demonstrations and crafts are other highlights of the event. Demonstrations include early American pottery, weaving and spinning, natural dying, woodworking and a blacksmith. Early American music will be played and dancing lessons will be offered to the tourists.

There will be samples of hearth cooking, games for the children, a fashion show, displaying clothing from the 1800s, student exhibits and a nationally known Boone historian will be available to answer questions. Individuals, groups and families are welcome to observe the encampments and demonstrations, from 9am-6pm, on both days.

“It’s a good event for anyone who wants to learn about the Boone family,” Maxheimer said. “They were among the first family to live west of St. Louis, and their story is pretty exciting.”

Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (55 years and up), $6 for children (ages four to 11) and $5 for Lindenwood University students. The Daniel Boone Home is located at 1868 Highway F, which is halfway between Defiance and New Melle on Highway F.
