Fall dance concert to feature African dance

More than 70 dancers will take the stage of Jelkyl Theatre, Nov. 6-8, performing African to modern dance styles.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. and features dance premiers by 19 student choreographers, as well as original music and art. Lindenwood’s award-winning Lion Line Dance Team will perform choreography by Julie Jamison and Brenley Burlison, and the Lionettes will perform “Higher Ground.” Other choreographers include Amy LaRue and Hydi Andrews.

Senior Shih-Wei Wang combines her talents as actress and dancer to choreograph a dance/drama inspired by a drowning. Artist Demetrious Korbakis will create an original abstract painting during each performance, and Amy LaRue will sing part of the music.

Amy Ball’s “Kisses From My Kool-Aid,” uses music composed by Simon Ahmed in an experimental blending with modern dance. Nature inspired Rusty Reeves’ “Autumn Leaves,” and he shows his tap talent in collaboration with Erin Ruebhausen. The Dave Matthews Band sends taps flying in Carrie Nestor and Alison Zagarri’s “Everyday,” while 15 dancers tap in Anna Potts, “I Will Survive.”

African and modern dance is combined in choreography by Meloney Jones, with music by a traditional African drummer. Stephanie Hardy uses skate boards, razor scooters and in-line skates for a unique dance. Graduate student, Luana Ely choreographs a solo, “Essential Endeavor,” to “Mystical Chants,” hymns based on “the child as executor of the Heavenly Plan of Redemption.”

Trevor Harrison brings his hip-hop expertise to the stage, and Nicki Burkholder, Kelly Pierce and Stephani Scott push their dancing techniques in “Both Hands,” by Ani Difranco, and “Baby did a Bad Thing,” by Chris Isaac.
