Quartet dazzles crowd at national barbershop competition

With a contest performance that garnered two standing ovations, Vocal Spectrum from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, swept the MBNA America Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest, outdistancing nearest rivals by a comfortable ten percent margin.

The four men demonstrated their total understanding of the barbershop style, and the quartet lived up to its name, delivering a vocal spectrum from breathless softs to dynamic louds with seeming ease.

The members of Vocal Spectrum are Timothy Warwick, tenor; Eric Dalbey, lead; Jonathan Moroni, baritone; and Chris Hallam, bass.

In second place was Four Score from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of San Diego. Two quartets tied for third, just 8 points back of second: the nile manski trio (note, no caps) from Loyola University and the University of New Orleans, and the Musical Island Boys from Tawa College, Victoria University in New Zealand.

Fifth place went to Fortissimo from Palm Beach Atlantic University and Palm Beach Community College in Florida.

The MBNA America Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest is held in conjunction with the 66th annual international convention and contest of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Twenty-two quartets qualified for Friday’s final round of competition through district contests. The field included foursomes from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

Founded in 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Barbershop Harmony Society is the world’s largest all-male singing organization, with members across North America plus affiliates in eight countries overseas.
