LU Offers Americorps Scholarships

January 4, 2007

Lindenwood University has announced it will match an education grant given to members of AmeriCorps, a government program in which participants can earn money for college while working in various community service initiatives.

AmeriCorps was launched in 1994 at the federal level and had has more than 250,000 members since its inception. Currently, 70,000 people serve in AmeriCorps. Members serve in a variety of community service initiatives in their communities and, after a one-year term of service, receive an education award that can be used to pay for college or outstanding student loans.

“We are extremely excited to establish this relationship with Americorps,” said Joseph Parisi, Lindenwood’s executive director of undergraduate admissions. “They are true exemplars of the core values and community spirit that we carry here at Lindenwood University. This is a fantastic way to reward these outstanding youth leaders with character scholarships.”

The maximum AmeriCorps award, for 1,700 hours of service, is $4,725; lesser awards are given for smaller time commitments. Students can get the education award a maximum of two years. The Lindenwood match program takes effect in the spring 2007 semester. It will be administered as part of Lindenwood’s Million Dollar Scholarship program.

“I salute Lindenwood University for the initiative they have shown in rewarding those who have answered the call to serve their country,” said David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees AmeriCorps. “AmeriCorps alumni are a valuable asset as they bring real world experience and professional skills to campus.”
