LU Offers Teacher Workshop on Civil War

Lindenwood University is offering a week-long workshop this summer to help teachers develop lessons on the Civil War using sites, people, stories and documents from surrounding region.

Civil War St. Louis, a summer workshop for teachers, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 11 through 15 at Lindenwood’s main campus, 209 S. Kingshighway, St. Charles. The workshop is designed for teachers to help their students become engaged in and understand the Civil War. The workshop presents background and resources on topics including the Civil War homefront, Missouri politics divided between the Confederacy and the Union, and the personal and social conflicts facing a Southern slave city (St. Louis) remaining loyal to the North.

Teachers will receive a notebook full of curriculum ideas and materials that can be used right away in their classrooms. The workshop will also include accessible curriculum, field trips and sources to help teach the Civil War using local examples. The class fulfills three graduate credit hours toward a master of arts degree in education.

For more information about the workshop or to enroll, call Don Heidenreich, Lindenwood dean of Humanities, at 636-949-4414.
