Lindenwood Receives $2 Million Gift

September 23, 2008

Lindenwood University announced at a press conference today (September 23) that its newest building has been named the J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts, thanks to a $2 million gift from Jerry Scheidegger, long-time St. Louis area businessman and Lindenwood board member.

The new name for the building will be displayed on the exterior of the building and on a digital sign that will be visible from First Capitol Drive and West Clay Street. The building, which opened on Sept. 11 with a performance by Liza Minnelli, is Lindenwood’s largest at 138,000 square feet. Its features include the 1,200-seat Bezemes Family Theatre, the 250-seat Emerson Black Box Theatre, the Boyle Gallery, the Charter LUTV HD Studio and an array of classrooms, practice rooms, workshops and offices.

Scheidegger is chairman of the board of The Corporate Group, Inc., which specializes in commercial and residential real estate leasing. Founded by Scheidegger in 1972, the company now owns and manages more than 1 million square feet of commercial property, as well as 140 residential units in prime locations.

In addition to serving on the Lindenwood Board of Directors, Scheidegger is on the boards at Midwest Bank Center, Bridgeway Counseling Center, the Salvation Army and BJC. Additionally, he is active with Youth in Need and the Home Builders Association.

The J. Scheidegger Center is part of an ambitious building program at Lindenwood, supported by a fundraising campaign called “Create the Future: People, Programs and Facilities.” Scheidegger’s contribution is the cornerstone gift of that campaign. It is among the largest contributions in Lindenwood’s 180-year history.

“We are very pleased that our beautiful new arts center will bear the Scheidegger name,” said Lindenwood President James D. Evans, Ph.D. “Jerry is a valuable member of our board and is truly a pillar of this community. We are grateful for his generosity and his leadership."
