Sibley Biographer Wolferman will Appear as Part of Speaker Series

October 9, 2008

Author Kristie Wolferman will continue Lindenwood University’s 2008-09 Speaker Series with an appearance at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, in the Butler Library on Lindenwood’s main campus.

Wolferman will discuss her book, “The Indomitable Mary Easton Sibley,” which tells the story of the life of Lindenwood’s founder, who started the school in 1827 in a log cabin on the site of the current Lindenwood campus. The event will be held in conjunction with Lindenwood’s Homecoming celebration.

The event is free and open to the public.

Wolferman is a native of Kansas City. She has a bachelor's degree in history from Middlebury College and a master's in history from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She taught for 20 years at Pembroke High School, in Kansas City and is currently a teacher and tutor of middle and high school students at the O'Neal School in Pinehurst, N.C.

The most recent of her three books tells the story of Lindenwood founder Mary Easton Sibley. Although Sibley's life has been told in older accounts, Wolferman's is the first to fully draw on Mary and husband George Sibley's journals and letters, with Mary's journal especially shedding light on her views regarding women's social and political roles, slavery, temperance, religion, and other topics.

By reconstructing Sibley's inner life as well as her career, Wolferman depicts not merely a frontier heroine and educational pioneer but an assertive woman who did not hesitate to express unconventional views.

The 2008-09 Lindenwood University Speaker Series, which is new this year, started in September and includes 11 speaker events in all and extends through mid-April. For more information, visit www.lindenwood.edu/academics/speakerseries.asp.
