Lindenwood Starting a Daytime College in Belleville

December 15, 2008

Lindenwood University has announced plans to offer daytime, semester-based programs at its Belleville campus. Currently, the campus is used exclusively for Lindenwood’s accelerated evening programs.

Lindenwood President James D. Evans, Ph.D., said the university will offer courses in business administration, communications, criminal justice and health management, starting in the fall of 2009. Programs will be offered for junior- and senior-level students only, so as not to compete with Southwestern Illinois College, a community college that serves the Belleville area with two-year degree program but offers no four-year degrees.

“We want to work with them and give the two-year college students a place to continue their education in Belleville,” Evans said.

In addition to the daytime academic programs at the site, Lindenwood plans to establish a slate of intercollegiate athletic programs in Belleville; Lindenwood competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Lindenwood has been offering academic programs in Belleville since 2003; prior to its acquisition of the campus, it was the site of Belleville West High School. Since taking over the campus, Lindenwood has spent more than $5 million on renovations, including a restoration project for the school’s auditorium and the rehabbing and updating of several classrooms. Work is currently in progress on the library building, which will be used for additional classroom space.

Initially, cafeteria service will be offered at the site, but not on-campus housing. Enrollment at the campus in 2008 was at 1,200 students and is expected to be at 1,400 in 2009. Evans said the daytime program could add 2,000 students at the site over the next five to ten years.
