Lindenwood Selects Lynx as Mascot; Introduces First Student

Lindenwood University unveiled its new Belleville campus mascot Thursday--the Lynx--and also introduced its ceremonial first student for the new day college starting this fall.

President James D. Evans, Ph.D., announced the Lynx would be Lindenwood's mascot in Belleville. He said Lindenwood will field teams in mens and womens soccer this fall.

"We didn't want to be Lion's East," said Evans. "We wanted our own mascot in Belleville that would maintain the Lindenwood brand but allow for individuality and community identity."

Evans said Lindenwood conducted a community contest to name the mascot. The winner, who will receive a $5,000 scholarship, is Shannon Horn of Swansea. Four other finalists recieve $2,000 scholarships: Mike Rumsey of Troy (Griffins), Jonathon Van Buren of Red Bud (Ligers), Mary Brown of O'Fallon (Lipizzaners), and John Haynes of East St. Louis (Ridgebacks).

Besides congratulating Horn for his winning "Lynx" name and recognizing the finalists, Lindenwood recognized its first student in this fall's day college, Latisha Barefield, who is transferring to LU after receiving her associate's degree from Southwestern Illinois College in the spring.

Barefield has battled cancer and overcome many obstacles to reach this point in her life to pursue a college.
