Summer Play ‘Harvey’ Opens July 17
June 24, 2009
The Lindenwood University Theatre Department will present its summer play, “Harvey,” at 7:30 p.m. on July 17, 18, 24 and 25 in the school’s Emerson Black Box Theater, located in the J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts.
Tickets cost $10 and are available at the Scheidegger Center Box Office, located at 2300 West Clay Street in St. Charles, just west of First Capitol Drive. The box office phone is 636-949-4433; hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
“Harvey,” by Mary Chase, debuted in 1944 and was released as a hit movie starring Jimmy Stewart in 1950. The beloved story continues to delight audiences today. The winner of a Pulitzer Prize for drama, the play is about Elwood P. Dowd, a pleasant, friendly man who claims he is often accompanied by a 6 ½-foot-tall rabbit that only he can see. Of course, Dowd’s acquaintances question his sanity, but they can’t help but be taken in by his unflagging good nature.
“The play still endears itself to audiences because we all wish we could be a little like Elwood P. Dowd: unflappable, always pleasant, always polite, and a lover of life and people,” said Larry D. Quiggins, director of the play and director of the Lindenwood Theatre Department. “It is a misconception that Harvey is only about an imaginary rabbit. First off, Harvey does exist and the story shows how life is what you make of it and you can either enjoy the people around you or you can be a stranger.”
The cast features Brian Kappler as Elwood P. Dowd and also includes Lindsay Bartlett, Beth Wickenhauser, Dustin Massie, Shannon Daugherty, Joe Bayne, Larry Quiggins, Jenni Passig, David Moreshead, Kevin Hester and Erin Klepper. Assistant director is Erin Klepper, and the stage manager is Connie Vaught.
