Boy Scout of the Year Award Winner to Attend Lindenwood

July 1, 2009

Lindenwood University and the Greater St. Louis Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America have selected Ramon (R.J.) Portilla as the winner of Lindenwood’s 2009 Boy Scout of the Year Award.

Portilla, a 2009 graduate of Francis Howell North High School, signed last week to attend Lindenwood in the fall; he plans to study broadcasting in the School of Communications and compete on the wrestling team. The son of Ray and Lisa Portilla of St. Charles, he competed in football, volleyball, wrestling and track in high school and was a 2004 recipient of the Boy Scouts’ National Certificate of Merit for helping his brother Greg during two life-threatening seizures. Portilla has been a Boy Scout for seven years.

“We are proud of R.J. and all of the Scouts who are preparing themselves to be tomorrow’s leaders by attending outstanding educational institutions like Lindenwood University,” said John M. Primrose, scout executive and CEO of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. “Scouting prepares young people to become responsible and productive members of society and fosters a desire to be lifelong learners.”

The Boy Scout of the Year award is part of Lindenwood’s Million Dollar Character Scholarship program, for which students can apply for and receive scholarships for character-based achievements in affiliation with a number of area organizations, including the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and many others.

Lindenwood University, founded in 1827, is an independent liberal arts university offering 84 undergraduate degree programs and 37 graduate programs in diverse areas of study ¬in traditional and accelerated formats. Lindenwood operates a residential campus in historic St. Charles, as well as 10 extension sites throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area.
