The Lindenwood University Theatre Department will open its 2009-10 season with a stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book, “The Hobbit.” Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 through 31 and Nov. 6 and 7 with a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 8. The plays is directed by Larry D. Quiggins, director of the Theatre Department at Lindenwood, and adapted for the stage by Patricia Gray. This timeless tale revolves around the title character, Bilbo Baggins, who lives a quiet, peaceful life in his comfortable hole at Bag End in the Shire until his comfort is shattered by the arrival of the old wizard Gandalf. The wizard persuades Bilbo to set out on an adventure, which is highly unusual for a hobbit, with a group of militant dwarves, who are embarking on a quest to reclaim their treasure from the marauding dragon Smaug. On Gandalf’s recommendation, they expect Bilbo to be their thief.

“‘The Hobbit’ is a delightful fantasy for the entire family,” Quiggins said. “Come join Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the wizard, and the dwarves for an adventure of a lifetime!”

The assistant director is Lindsay Bartlett. Stage manager is Tara Queen. Assistant stage manager if Sammi Saffron. The cast includes John Pipitone as Bilbo, and John Elkins as Gandalf, as well as Jimmy Krawlzyk, Bobby Stevens, Jen Sabbert, Katie Ritter, Tasha Zebrowski, Jamal Mackey, James Lewis, Peter Colombatto, Nathaniel Carlson, Blain Adams, Nicole Stewart, Jacob Bucher, Rogelio Leal, Jason Puff, Taylor Lewis, Ryan Wood, Laura Gibbons, Dylan Jimenez, Brent Nowack, Parth Partel, Eric Peters, Melissa De Jong, Ryanne Dunlap, Betsy Bowman, Colleen Kelly, Shannon Daugherty, Josh Payne and Jamal Mackey as the voice of Smaug.
