"Inspecting Carol," an uproarious backstage farce that combines Gogol's giddy romp "The Inspector General" with a masterful spoof of Dickens' seasonal perennial "A Christmas Carol," will be the holiday offering of the Brass Rail Players at Lindenwood community theater group.
Auditions for this fresh, modern comedy will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, and Monday, Oct. 11, at Lindenwood University's Belleville auditorium, 2600 West Main Street, Belleville, Ill. Call-backs, if necessary, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
Eight performances are set for Dec. 2-5 and 9-12, with Thursday through Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
"Inspecting Carol," written by Daniel Sullivan and The Seattle Repertory Company, pokes fun at nearly every politically correct concept of the '90s. A third-rate theater company in a small Midwestern town is broke and in danger of losing a much-needed grant from the National Endowment of the Arts unless a dispatched inspector agrees they are worthy. Wackiness ensues when they mistake an awful wannabe-actor as the inspector, and cast him in their annual cash cow, "A Christmas Carol," which the rest of the eccentric troupe is sick of doing. Things further go awry when the real inspector shows up and a disastrous dress rehearsal is inevitable.
Roles in a wide age range are available for four women and eight men plus Dickens Carolers 'loaded with Christmas cheer." The Soapbox Playhouse's frazzled founder, impatient stage manager, self-absorbed leading man, hammy hypochondriac, nervous business manager, novice actor with severe stage fright, pair of loony British master thespians, oversized no-longer-Tiny Tim and mute stagehand Spike are among the memorable characters.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and brief interviews with the director and members of the creative team. Actors may perform an optional prepared comedy monologue (1 minute or less).
