In its inaugural season of play at Lindenwood – Belleville, the Lynx golf team has made history for the university. After two days of outstanding play, the team has become the first LU – Belleville squad to place at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament by taking second earlier this afternoon.
Lynx golfers traveled on Saturday by van to Penn State University for the tournament after being ranked fifth by the USCAA a week before. While not the favored to win, the team certainly showed that Lynx golfers had the tools to make a run.
As the tournament started Monday, the team came out with pinpoint accuracy. Shay Burton led the team with an opening round of 78, tying him for 9th place overall in individual scores. Brett Denap and Mike Manus came out strong as well, both shooting 79. This was good enough to tie them both at thirteenth place.
At the end of the day, the Lynx sat at third place overall, just five strokes behind leader and defending champion Rochester College. Quite a feat, considering that this is Lindenwood – Belleville’s first year of competition.
The team continued with solid play on the Penn State Blue Course. After a team score of 321, the team was able to jump past Apprentice School during the day to bring home second place overall. This is the first award for any team at Lindenwood – Belleville and the first LU – Belleville team to compete at a national tournament.
Following the tournament, Lynx golfer Brett Denap was named as a tournament All-American. Denap shot a 79 on day one and followed it up with a final round of 75 today. Overall, he finished in fourth-place overall in the individual rankings.
This finish caps off a great year for the team. The Lynx started off the season with a first-place finish at St. Louis Country Club over both McKendree and Webster Universities. They would continue their excellent play by placing in the middle of the pack over large fields at the Cropper Classic and at the Bishops Buffet Invitational. Finally, in the Illinois Collegiate Invitational, just prior to the national tournament, they finished with a big fourth-place finish.
