LU to be Represented at Nelly’s Black and White Ball

December 17, 2010

Lindenwood University Director of First-Year Programs Shane Williamson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Pernell Witherspoon, Ph.D., and select members of the Black Student Union will attend Grammy award -winning artist Nelly’s fifth annual Black and White Ball on Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Chase Park Plaza hotel in downtown St. Louis.

They will be in attendance to recognize the 2010 recipients of the Black and White Ball Scholarships that are annually presented by the University in partnership with Nelly’s record label, Derrty Ent., and Plaza Motors.

“Last year’s Black and White Ball scholarship winners, Ammi Bell and Cristina Catarinicchia, are invited and will be spotlighted during the event,” said Williamson. “It’s neat that they have that special time to stand up and shine.”

Lindenwood announced in 2008 at the Black and White Ball that it would begin annually awarding two four-year full-tuition scholarships to deserving students. Nelly has visited the University annually since then to formally present the funds to the award-winning incoming freshmen.

“We will be sending 2011-2012 scholarship application packets to high schools in the St. Louis Metro Area soon,” Williamson said. “The Black and White Ball Scholarship Evaluation Committee will make their selections and the winners will be announced in April, 2011, when Nelly will be back again to award the scholarships.”

The opportunity is open to all incoming first-year students who meet Lindenwood’s admission requirements and demonstrate academic success, leadership, and financial need. Applicants must also submit a 200-300 word essay describing their personal goals and aspirations for college and their plans for applying their education and talents in the future.
