Renowned Poet Shirley Leflore to Speak at Lindenwood

February 10, 2011

Nationally renowned poet Shirley LeFlore will perform a reading of her work with multi-instrumentalist David A.N. Jackson at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the Lindenwood University Cultural Center Auditorium.

The reading is a part of the Lindenwood University Speaker Series and coincides with the university’s celebration of Black History Month. The Lindenwood University Cultural Center is located at 400 N. Kingshighway, two blocks north of the main Lindenwood campus in St. Charles.

One of St. Louis’ best known poets, LeFlore has a distinguished career, starting in the 1960s and ‘70s with the St. Louis-based BAG (Black Artists Group). She has worked as a successful performance artist in New York and has staged poetry in collaboration with jazz, classical, and gospel music, as well as with dancers and visual artists. Her theatrical poetry production was staged at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

LeFlore’s work appears in several chapbooks, magazines, and anthologies, and her performance poetry appears on CDs, including the forthcoming album, Hammiet Bluitt’s Barbecue Band. She is a recipient of the Warrior Poet Award for lifetime achievement, and her selected works, tentatively titled, Brassbones and Rainbows and Rituals is being prepared for publication.
