New Building to be named Evans Commons to Honor LU President

The Lindenwood University Board of Directors has announced that the school’s new 119,000-square-foot student center, which is scheduled to open this summer, will be named The Evans Commons in recognition of Lindenwood President James D. Evans.

“The board is pleased to take this action in recognition of Dr. Evans’ many years of exemplary service to the university as a professor and as an administrator, as well as his outstanding leadership as Lindenwood’s president,” said Jim J. Shoemake, chairman of the Lindenwood Board of Directors.

Evans, who started work at Lindenwood in 1974, served as professor of psychology, dean of social sciences, dean of sciences, dean of faculty, provost, and acting president before being appointed president in February of 2007.

The $20 million building is in its final phase of construction and is expected to open by July, according to Julie Mueller, vice president for operations. Designed with considerable input from Lindenwood’s students, the structure will contain a 400-seat dining hall, a large gymnasium with basketball and volleyball courts, a suspended running track, fitness rooms, media spaces, and various student-organization offices and meeting areas.

“The Evans Commons has many student-oriented purposes,” said Mueller. “Those purposes include promotion of healthy lifestyles, encouragement of social and career networking, facilitation of student-organization activities, provision of more opportunities for recreation and relaxation, and further enhancement of the group spirit and cohesiveness we enjoy on this campus.”

A building dedication ceremony will be held early in the fall semester.
