Lindenwood Commencement Exercises Marked by Record Participation

It was cold and rainy outside, but the mood was festive in St. Charles County’s Family Arena as nearly 1,800 graduates took part in Lindenwood University’s annual commencement exercises on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14.

Friday’s Graduate Commencement and Baccalaureate featured a keynote address by award-winning St. Louis sportscaster Bob Ramsey, and the address at the Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday was delivered by entrepreneur and author Mike Roberts.

The ceremonies included students who graduated or will graduate between August 2010 and September 2011. Overall, 3,697 graduates were eligible to participate, with 1,698 bachelor’s degrees, 1,851 master’s degrees, 104 specialist degrees, and 44 doctoral degrees. Participating in the undergraduate ceremony were 1,018 graduates, while 768 participated in the graduate ceremony; both numbers, as well as the total number of graduates eligible to participate, are school records, as they have been every year for the past several years.

Roberts, a Lindenwood alumnus from the class of 1971, has been a successful entrepreneur, public official, author, and real estate developer. He founded the consulting and construction management firm Roberts & Associates with his brother, Stephen Roberts, as well as a highly successful broadcasting and wireless business.

The title of his address was, “The Power of Action.” He told the graduates that their lives were “under construction” and urged them to take advantage of their education and take charge of their destiny.

Ramsey graduated from Lindenwood in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and has over the ensuing years established himself as one of the most respected sports broadcasters in St. Louis, serving as a commentator and play-by-play announcer for a number of college and professional teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals.

His speech was titled, “You Can’t Win the Pennant on the First Day.”
