Speaker Series to Continue with Political Satirist P.J. O’Rourke

September 26, 2011

Lindenwood University’s 2011-12 Speaker Series will continue with author, journalist, and satirist P.J. O’Rourke at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Lindenwood’s Bezemes Family Theatre. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Bezemes Family Theater is located in the J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts at 2300 West Clay Street, one block west of First Capitol Drive St. Charles.

O’Rourke, considered by many to be America’s premier political satirist, has published 12 books and has more citations in the Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations than any living writer. In the early 1970s, he joined The National Lampoon, where he became editor-in-chief. In the ’80s he became a foreign correspondent and since has covered crises and conflicts in more than 70 countries.

O’Rourke has written for a multitude of diverse publications, including Rolling Stone, where he was the foreign affairs desk chief for 15 years. He is the H.L. Mencken Research Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., and a frequent panelist on National Public Radio’s game show “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!”

Known as a hard-driving, cigar-smoking conservative, he, in fact, bashes all political persuasions. As he puts it, “Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.” His newest book is titled Don’t Vote: It Just Encourages the Bastards. Other books include Parliament of Whores, Give War a Chance, and Holidays in Hell.

The Lindenwood Unversity Speaker Series will run through April with events featuring author and journalist Novella Carpenter (Sept. 20), author and political commentator P.J. O’Rourke (Oct. 4), Storm Chaser and Meteorologist Reed Timmer (Feb. 22), and author, livestock innovator, and autism advocate Temple Grandin (March 13).
