Lindenwood University Press announces the release of a second, more comprehensive edition of St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann’s acclaimed book, Crossroads: A History of St. Charles County. At nearly twice the length of the first edition, published in 2004, the new edition is more comprehensive and corresponds with the 2012 bicentennial of St. Charles County.
A limited quantity of the book will be available for purchase by mid-December for holiday shoppers. The book, which sells for $34.95, is available at the Lindenwood University Spirit & Supplies Shoppe at First Capitol Drive and Tompkins Road. Proceeds from sales of the book will go toward funding of the H.K. “Kriete” Stumberg Memorial Scholarship for history majors at the university.
Crossroads follows the history of the county from the frontier years through the early days of Missouri’s statehood, the Civil War, the turn of the 20th century, the world wars, and the Great Depression, all the way to the present day. The book lays out in great detail the issues, the people, and the politics that shaped the county as it grew into a significant piece of a major metropolitan area.
“There is more information on every period than there was in the first edition—a lot more on the Civil War,” Ehlmann said. “I used more primary source information—public documents, letters—it’s more comprehensive. It also goes to the present day, whereas the first edition ended in the 1980s.”
Ehlmann is serving his second term as County Executive of St. Charles County. He taught history in the public schools for seven years. With a law degree from Washington University, he practiced law in St. Charles County, also serving in the four years in the Missouri House of Representatives and the eight years in the Missouri Senate. Ehlmann served as the county’s director of administration before his election as county executive. In addition, he has served as associate judge of St. Charles County and circuit judge.
