LU Archaeology Field School to Conduct Digs in St. Charles

May 18, 2012

Lindenwood University's Department of Anthropology will be conducting archaeological excavations on two sites related to two famous historical figures. From May 15-June 1, students will be excavating at the homestead site of the founder of the City of St. Charles, Louis Blanchette, now the site of Plank Road Gifts.

Last year, research led by Dr. Steve Dasovich, archaeology professor at Lindenwood, uncovered a late-1700s building that is probably one of Blanchette’s. This year, excavations will open a large area of this building to try to learn more about this largely unknown historical figure. These excavations are free and open to the public for viewing.

Excavations will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

After June 1, the excavations move to the first Missouri home of Nathan Boone, youngest son of Daniel Boone. Here, the excavations will focus on a building that may be associated with Daniel Boone. These excavations will take place on Lindenwood's Boone Home Campus between New Melle and Defiance, Mo., along State Highway F. The public may view these excavations as part of their paid admission to the historic property.

Excavations will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For further information, contact Dasovich at 314-609-6132 or
