Board Approves Second Residence Hall, New Sports
November 13, 2013
Lindenwood University’s Board of Directors approved on Friday, November 9, 2013 the construction of a second new residence hall and the addition of four new sports at the Belleville campus. The new dormitory will be the second to be constructed in less than a year as the Lindenwood University continues to experience record enrollment.
Lindenwood University-Belleville broke ground on its first all-female residence hall in May 2012, and the 200-bed facility is scheduled to open for student move-in on December 1, 2013. The second dormitory approved by the Board will be an all-male dormitory with a capacity of approximately 200 students. The new $4 million men’s residence hall will face the campus across West Main Street where the former New Freedom Baptist Church stood earlier this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2014.
“We are thrilled with our Board of Directors’ decision to approve the construction of a second residence hall, which will enable us to better accommodate our growing residential student population,” said Dr. Jerry Bladdick, President of Lindenwood University-Belleville. “Currently, we have over 600 students living on campus. When the women’s dormitory is completed in December, our housing capacity will total around 800, and the new men’s dorm will give us the ability to house 1,000 students on campus by fall 2014.”
“The vote of confidence we continue to receive from our Board of Directors is truly appreciated, as is the support we receive from the Belleville, St. Clair County, and southwestern Illinois residents,” said Bladdick.
Also approved by Lindenwood’s Board of Directors on Friday was the addition of four new sports programs to the Belleville campus: men’s and women’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. These sports will be introduced during the 2014-2015 academic year, bringing the total sports offerings at Lindenwood Belleville up to 27.
“Adding ice hockey and swimming and diving shows our commitment to having a high-quality athletic department at Lindenwood Belleville,” said Scott Spinner, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for Lindenwood Belleville.
The university is in the process of finding a facility for both programs and is currently looking at several different options.
“We will be hiring coaches and starting recruiting for the new programs immediately,” said Spinner.
These major board approvals come on the heels of the grand opening on October 22 of Lindenwood University-Belleville’s Communication Center, complete with television and radio broadcast studios, and the campus’ 10-year anniversary recognition and appreciation dinner on November 2 at the St. Clair Country Club in Belleville. The campus celebrated its past 10 years in Belleville and honored those who have supported and contributed to its impressive growth and success over the last decade.
