The Lindenwood athletic training program is the only one of its kind in the St. Louis area and does an incredible job preparing its students to enter a growing field. LU’s faculty are among the best qualified in the nation. Our top students work with professional sports teams, including the NFL St. Louis Rams. Applications for admissions into the program are being accepted now. Call program coordinator Dan Brennan at (636) 949-4365 or the Day Admissions Office at (636) 949-4949 for details.
Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who work with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. They are traditionally thought of as working with high school, college, and professional athletes. They can be found anywhere, however, and today are working more and more in other fields, such as the performing arts, military, public safety, and industrial settings.
The success of Lindenwood’s program can be found in the success students find after leaving Lindenwood. The faculty are among the best qualified in the nation—they are graduates of CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education)-certified institutions, and one is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame. Seventy-seven percent of Lindenwood students pass the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers the first time they take the certification test, and over 90 percent pass the test on subsequent attempts. Eighty percent of LU’s athletic training graduates continue their education at the master’s level, while the other 20 percent enter the athletic training field right after graduating.
At Lindenwood, a student starts the athletic training process as a freshman by taking prerequisite classes and observing athletic trainers. After their freshmen years, students apply to officially enter the athletic training program, and approximately 50 students are in the program each year.
The athletic training practice domains at Lindenwood are injury/illness prevention and wellness protection, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and organizational and professional health and well-being.
Besides classes, athletic training students at Lindenwood must pass six clinical assignments, each of which is 165 hours. One of the unique features of the Lindenwood program is the vastly different sports programs that the students get to work with. Between NCAA and Student Life Sports, Lindenwood athletic trainers work with 51 sports teams.
In their first clinical assignment, students work with a different team every four weeks. After that, they are assigned a sports program to work with throughout the year, which gives the student a hands-on learning experience.
Besides the clinicals, Lindenwood students also get to experience internships during their time in school. The school has agreements with high schools, health clinics, and physicians’ offices to provide students more experience. Some of the top students even get to work with some area professional teams, including the NFL St. Louis Rams.
"As an athletic training student here at Lindenwood University, I have received an education that is second to none,” said Thomas Dannenberg. “The clinical experiences have allowed me to bring my classroom education into real life situations. I believe the athletic training staff here at Lindenwood has prepared me to go into any athletic training setting with the opportunity to be very successful."
The beauty of athletic training education at Lindenwood University is not just the education and training received but the gathered wisdom from a National Athletic Trainers Association’s Hall of Fame member to certified athletic trainers who have 1-2 years of experiences that have graduated from CAATE-accredited programs at 20 different universities across the country. This is then supported by alumni who work in athletic training settings in high schools, colleges and universities, physician offices, industry, corporations, the military, professional sports, and other settings.
