Sibley Day on Wednesday, February 20

February 18, 2013

Lindenwood University-Belleville will host its fifth annual Sibley Day on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in honor of University founders George and Mary Sibley. Students will be excused from classes in order to attend their choice of a variety of presentations and events scheduled throughout the day.

Sibley Day began in 2009 as an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to expand their knowledge base and to celebrate the school’s philosophy of offering unique educational experiences. This year’s event, themed “Reach for the Stars,” will offer a wide range of activities designed to appeal to many different areas of interest.

The public is invited to attend the keynote presentation by Dr. Martha Ackmann, Lindenwood alumna, author, and senior lecturer in gender studies at Mount Holyoke College, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb.19, in the Lindenwood Auditorium. Ackmann will be speaking about her book, The Mercury 13: The True Story of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight (Random House). During her presentation, she will detail the experiences of women pilots in the 1960s who were secretly tested to be astronauts. The book was named one of the top nonfiction books of the year (2004) by BookMarks and the Boston Globe and won the Amelia Earhart Medal and the media prize from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, Dr. Martha Ackmann will return to co-host a creative writing workshop for staff and students with faculty member Dr. Brooke Taylor. The day will feature additional faculty presentations on topics, such as “The History of Belleville and Mary Sibley,” “Gender and Sports,” and “Dress for Success.”

Other Sibley Day activities will also include a student, faculty, and staff improvisation session, as well as one faculty member’s presentation and musical demonstration of the bands Uncle Tupelo/Wilco and Jeff Tweedy, whose members attended Belleville Township High School. The Lindenwood Student Government Association will hold a formal tea party with special guests, modern-day Mary and George Sibley.

LU-Belleville’s Sibley Day 2013 will be a blend of historical, motivational, and fun activities designed to inspire everyone to “reach for the stars.”
