LSGA Hosting Bone Marrow Donor Drive for Classmate

March 4, 2013

Lindenwood University students are joining together to help senior Sean Murry and his family in the fight against a rare blood disorder called Diamond-Blackfan Anemia, which can only be cured with the help of a matching bone marrow donor. The Lindenwood Student Government Association will host a donor drive from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, at the school’s St. Charles campus at 209 South Kingshighway, St. Charles, Mo., 63301.

This is the second year the University has organized a drive for Murry, whose three brothers also suffer from the disease. The goal is to find a life-saving match for him, his brothers, or others like them in need of bone marrow transplants.

“Last year we registered 568 people at Lindenwood, which was the largest drive the Murry family had seen,” said David Mathias, LSGA President. “There was no match for Sean, but 11 people have been contacted as possible matches for others on the national waiting list. That’s eleven lives that may be saved because of those efforts.”

Pre-registration is not required for the drive, which will take place in the Spellmann Campus Center. Participants may arrive anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and will complete a small amount of paperwork before being tested, which consists of swabbing the inside of the cheek. Samples will be added to the national bone marrow registry and donors will be contacted if matches are found.
