The Lindenwood University-Belleville baseball program and Head Coach Logan Johnson have announced the addition of former major league pitcher and local standout Randy Wells to the 2014 coaching staff. Wells will be a volunteer assistant for this year’s team.
Wells started his playing career as a catcher at Southwestern Illinois College, where he played from 2000-2002. In the spring of 2002, Wells was drafted by the Chicago Cubs, and in just three years, he was named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year. In 2009, Wells was a finalist for the Rookie of the Year.
Coach Johnson said Wells will have a great impact on the program.
“It’s great for our baseball program, Lindenwood Belleville’s Athletics Department, and the university to have another local coach on our staff,” Johnson said. “Randy has developed quality relationships in this area, and his connections will help our recruiting efforts as we continue to recruit the metro east area now and into the future.”
Wells finished his career with 28 wins in five major league seasons. Most recently, Wells played for the Texas Rangers’ AAA affiliate Round Rock before retiring.
“As a program, we’re excited to add a coach that has played the game at the highest level. Randy has tremendous experience and insight to pass along to our team,” Johnson said. “As a coaching staff, we will benefit from having another set of eyes watching and helping our players, and his knowledge of how the game is played will be a tremendous asset as we start our season.”
The Lynx start their season on Feb. 14 and 15 when they host the College of the Ozarks for a pair of doubleheaders. To start the season, the Lynx will play their first 10 games at home before going on the road to face future conference opponent Freed–Hardeman.
