Internship Program

Students in the recreation, sport and tourism administration program will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to real situations in leisure services through the internship requirements. Students have the option to choose from a variety of internship opportunities throughout the United States and foreign countries. Internships are a valuable resource for students to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom that will give them experiences when searching for employment in recreation, sport and tourism services.

The internship program is designed to meet the guidelines of the National Recreation and Park Association as well as satisfy the core competency areas in the recreation, sport and tourism administration program. These core competency areas include administration and governance, program services, site and facility operations, financial management, public relations and marketing, and emphasis specialization at the chosen internship agency. The recreation, sport and tourism administration department will assist as needed in finding internship opportunities for students; however students are responsible for securing their own internships.

Recreation, sport and tourism students are required to complete two internships. The first internship is a practicum (REC 38200) that requires 50 contact hours per credit for up to 3 credits (150 hours). The practicum is a “low-level” exposure internship designed to introduce students to the professional field of recreation, sport and tourism. The culminating experience for any recreation student’s educational goals will be the internship (REC 48200). This internship is designed to facilitate a “high-level” exposure to a possible vocational opportunity. Students will complete a minimum 400-hour 10 week long internship in the student’s area of specialization and complete a major project as a component of the internship.
